February 2018 Club Meeting – Open Competition

Thursday 22nd February 2018

Mike welcomed everyone to our second meeting of the year. We had had an approach from the Scouts for advice on a pair of wooden wheels. Do we have any members with wheelwright experience? None were present. Mike reported that we had decided to make a tiered carousel to replace our previous Christmas Tree at the Brighstone Festival. It was also hoped to display this prominently in Newport. The main business of the evening would be the Open Competition. Members were invited to submit any piece made in the last year which had not been previously seen and a wide variety of turnings were now on display for members to judge. Before judging by members got under way we had “Show & Tell” and, David Burden turning finials on the one lathe whilst the other was available for guidance on spindle turning. Tea, coffee and biscuits would be available as usual and the raffle would be drawn at the end of the evening.

Derek Toms brought in a piece of wood with an unusual inclusion. Here he holds it up for us all to see….a bullet!

David Burden works on a finial using a 3/8” spindle gouge.

Peter Smart showed two new books for the library both by Richard Raffan on bowl turning. The one concentrates on form and the other on techniques.

Peter also brought in some pen blanks which had been produced from the very rare Smokewood which had been given to the Club last summer. This would be sold to members for Club funds. The example he had turned was not for sale.

.A general shot of the competition entries. Each item can be seen individually on the Gallery on the website.

In the expert class, Mike had a runaway win with his ‘captive star’ based on one of David Springett’s Woodturning Wizardry projects.

David came second but clearly has work to do on his hollowing technique. Fortunately Mark Sanger is coming to show us how to do it properly.

Roy Groves was third with a Nick Arnull space rocket box.

Photos of each entry can be found here and the full competition results here .
