Wight Woodturners

September Club Meeting

 Thursday 22nd Sept 16

Building a Musical Instrument - A Talk by Mark Hickman

Mike opened the meeting welcoming Mark Hickman, our speaker for the evening. He also welcomed some new attendees ‘from Wolverton’ which had been a success, raising £322 for the Hospice. Click here to see the Thank you letter from the Earl Mountbatten Hospice -YOU WILL NEED TO LOGIN.

Following Mark’s talk there would be a further wood sales organised by Roy but this time without the dice. There was the usual raffle. Five new books had been obtained for the library including Mark Baker’s latest on wood for turning and some on furniture making donated by Ted.

Cameo, a lady’s group from Brighstone, had requested a speaker on Woodturning for next November. The final competition for the year had been moved to November to give longer for members to get their entries ready.

Mike drew attention to the exhibition in Carpenters Hall of Wizardry in Wood. Wed 12th to Sat 16th October.

Mark opened his talk by discussing violins which he said were still made largely to the specifications established by Stradivari in the 1600’s. Methods were unaltered and tools were basically the same apart from a few more modern versions. It was all hand work with knives, gouges, scrapers and planes. It had been found that the best musical qualities were obtained from spruce on the front and maple for the back and sides.

He then discussed the methods for the Mandolin and Lute, both of which are based on established designs and methods. Guitars on the other hand can be made to a number of shapes and Mark showed us one he had made with Rosewood back and sides.

We then had the bonus of a short recital.

Mike thanked Mark for a very interesting session and members showed their appreciation in the usual way.

With our new format we only have these larger pictures so the usual clicking won’t work!
