for the

Involuted Turning Competition

April 2018

Competition time again at Wight Woodturners! Apart from our Open Competitions the Committee try to choose a subject which extends the skills of the Members. Pushing the boundaries into unfamiliar territory is often the way we expand our skills – even if we only learn how NOT to do it!

The challenge this time was to produce a piece of “Involuted Turning” or Inside-Out turning as it is sometimes known. At our March meeting Roy gave us all a demonstration of the techniques involved. For the uninitiated, Inside-Outside turning is a process in which 2 or more blocks of wood are glued together with paper between each joint so that you can split them apart easily. Then once they are glued, the piece gets turned to a specific shape, which forms the inside; it is then sanded and finished. Then the glued up blank is split apart with a chisel and each block is rotated through180 deg and permanently glued without the paper, re-mounted on the lathe and the outside turned. Should you want a little more explanation, with photos on this technique, then follow this link here or here.

So, armed with this basic information our members set about pushing the boundaries as can be seen the fine examples below. Obviously not everyone’s cup-of-tea as the number of entries were a little down for this competition.

Many thanks to Roy, our Competition Master, for determining the winners from the members votes. The results for this competition can be found here and the rankings for the year are here.
