This evening we had a hands on demo with the
main theme
of the evening being techniques for using the skew.
Roger kicked off
the evening showing various cuts with the skew particularly the
planning
cut. After Roger had cut various shapes David stepped forward. Not only
did he use the skew to rough down some square section, but he also used
it to try turn an egg. Before he started on his egg he said "he hadn't
used a skew for several years" and that the best skew practice was to
turn eggs, His egg was almost (beautifully as is always the case with
David) formed when the dreaded skew catch bit :-( But at least
David showed what very skilled hands could achieved with a skew.
After a break for tea various other members
tried their
hand on the two lathes with the tools brought in by Roger and John.

brush
up their skills
